    Introduction:

    University Department of Persian, was started with effect from 9th June, 1993, after dividing the then Department of Foreign Languages, which was in its turn, established in 1964. It is housed in the University of Mumbai’s, Justice Ranade Bhavan, B Wing, 2nd Floor, Vidyanagari Campus, Kalina, Santacruz (East), Mumbai – 400 098.

    Persian has a centuries old long history in this country. Persian was still the official language and the language of the elites when the University of Mumbai was established in the year 1857 A.D. Even before the University came up, Persian was widely taught in all the then existing institutions. University teaching of Persian is almost as old as the University itself.

    The separate and independent Department of Persian enjoys academic freedom and ample opportunities to grow and develop on its own independently. The Department offers following Part Time as well as Full Time Courses in Persian:

    M.A DEGREE COURSE IN PERSIAN

     

    Students seeking admission to M.A. Degree Course should have completed their B.A. with Persian Language and Literature, as a main or subsidiary subject. However, under the Ordinance of 2237, graduates from the University of Mumbai or from the University recognized by the University of Mumbai in any faculty who have studied the Persian Language or having the prior knowledge of Persian language and literature may be recommended by the Department of Persian, for pursuing M.A. Degree Course of this University by clearing an entrance test conducted by the department with minimum 50% of marks.

      Participated in a Two Days’ International Seminar (24-25 March 2014) held at Department of Persian, Barkatullah University, Bhopal, M.P. and presented a paper on the topic “Shibli Nomani as a Critic : in the light of his sher-ul-ajam”.

      Participated in a Two Day’ National Seminar (11 -12 October 2014) held by National Ameer Khusrau society, New Delhi and presented a paper on the topic “Delhi, in the vision of Khusrau”.

      The Department was organized a National Seminar on “Relevance and Importance of Studying Language and Literature in Modern Times” on 7 March 2017 at I.C.S.S.R Conference Hall, J. P. Naik Bhavan, University of Mumbai, Kalina Campus, Mumbai-400 098.

      The Department was conducted a Special Guest Lecture event on “Contribution of Women to Persian Language and Literature in Modern Times”, on 8 March 2017 at I.C.S.S.R Conference Hall, J. P. Naik Bhavan, University of Mumbai, Kalina Campus, Mumbai-400 098.

    Visited Central University, MANUU, Gachibowli, Hyderabad, A.P. for conducting Viva in Persian for PhD on 8 May 2017.

    An article on the topic, “Universal Love and Harmony Reflected in Persian Poetry of Akbar’s Reign: A Brief Appraisal”, published in a book volume edited by the Institute of Persian Research, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh in February 2017.

    Attended one day International Seminar on Power of Education at Azamgarh, U.P. and presented a paper on “Role of Language and literature in the reconstruction of Society” on 14 May 2017.

    Was participated in an Inter departmental Sports Meet “Sportico” organised by Physical Education Department, University of Mumbai on 15 & 16 March 2017 and won first Prize in Carrom- Singles.

    • Departmental Activities :

    After five years interval, admission process for PhD in Persian restarted at the department. Three candidates submitted their outline of synopsis to Thesis section for pursuing PhD in Persian.

    CBCS (Choice Based Credit System) for M.A. programs introduced.

    Two Day National Seminar on 14 & 15 March 2018 on the topic “Amir Khusrau and His Contribution to Persian and Indian Culture” to be organized by the department at I.C.S.S.R. Conference Hall, J. P. Naik Bhavan, Kalina Campus, University of Mumbai, Mumbai.

    Was attended an interaction with US Delegation of the University of Pennsylvania visited our University on 17 July 2017 at Ambedkar Bhavan.

    Was participated in a Faculty Development Programme on 8 December 2017 organized by ICA and Dept. of Commerce, University of Mumbai, Mumbai.

    An article on the topic, “Urfi: a brightest luminary in the poetic firmament” published in a UGC approved refereed journal “DABEER”, An international Peer Reviewed Refereed Quarterly Literary Research Journal, Lucknow in its Vol. 4, April-September 2017.

    An article on the topic, “Tanha Chaand par Mohabbat ka Gahan” published in a UGC approved International refereed journal “Tazeen-e Adab”, Shirpur, Maharashtra,Vol.1, October-December 2017.

    Edited a book on the topic “Shibli Nomani and his contribution to Persian” which will be released on 14 March 2018 at ICSSR Conference Hall, J. P. Naik Bhavan, University of Mumabi on the eve of our Two Day National Seminar.
