• Introduction

     

    The University of Mumbai is one of the oldest and first Universities founded in India in 1857 which has distinguished history of exemplary achievements in various streams of education and training and has significantly contributed towards the nation building and continues to do so.

    The history of the education of performing arts of Music and Dance in Universities in India is not very old. Great musicians, musicologists, reformers who pioneered the modern trends in music performance and education from 19th century were Pandit Vishnu Digambar Paluskar and Pandit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande. Both these stalwarts research and restructured music education on modern scientific lines and established leading music institutions to impart training on these lines.

    Independence in 1947 brought renewed awareness of our cultural traditions and subjects of Indian Culture began getting included for study at various stages of excellence in the University curricula. The study of music - its education and performance started in the University of Bombay in1969. The Music Centre was established in this year and a two year Diploma Course in Hindustani Vocal Classical Music was started. From the very beginning the effort and the emphasis of the course taught here has been on the performing excellence. With this objective in view the leading performers of different schools or traditions in vocal music called "Gharanas" have been invited on the faculty of the Music Centre to impart training and performance skills to aspiring and promising students of music. The teaching methods and pattern here are based on the age-old and time tested "Guru Shishya Parampara".

     

    In 1978, the Music Centre in the University of Bombay was converted into the regular Department of Music and a three-year Degree Course in vocal music - Bachelor of Fine Arts (Music Vocal) was added to existing two year Diploma Course in Music H.V.C. In 1985, two year Diploma Course in Music Hindustani Instrumental Classical - Sitar and Hindustani Vocal Light were started. In 1988 two-year Diploma Course in Music Hindustani Instrumental Classical - Tabla and in 1989 two-year Post-graduate Course in Vocal Music - Master of Fine Arts (Music Vocal) were started in the Department of Music. Three Year Degree Courses (B.F.A.) in Hindustani Instrumental Classical - Sitar and Tabla were started in 1991.
    The Faculty in the Department of Music consists of Reader and Lecturer in Vocal Music, posts of Honorary Music Instructors on which leading and renowned performers belonging to various traditions have been appointed. Apart from this regular staff on Faculty, many renowned scholars, experts, music performers are invited as Visiting Lecturers to give lecturers, demonstrations and exhibit performance excellence and teach theory syllabus to the students of the Department.
    The interdisciplinary studies like Music and Psychology, Sociology, Philosophy and Religion along with the study of music Aesthetics, Music and Education, Research Methodology have been introduced at the M.Mus. level. The aim is to broaden the perspective of the students towards the study of music in relation to other related subjects. It must be noted here that all along these courses the central focus of all attention and related studies is on developing the ability for the good performance of music. The collective endeavour of all theory and practical study topics is to enrich the thinking, understanding and physical mechanism towards better performance of music.
    The objective of the music training and education imparted in the department of Music is to make the student all-round musician and performer, aware of the various concepts and issues involved, capable of the study of related subjects which develop the sunlight in music and all contributing to making a good, intelligent and impressive musician.

    Location :- The Department of Music is located on the first floor of the building 'Vidyapeeth Vidyarthi Bhavan' on 'B' Road, between Churchgate Railway Station (W.R.) on the East & beautiful Marine Drive on the West in South Mumbai.

    Working Hours :- The office of the Department of Music is open all working days, working Saturdays & during vacations from 10:20 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.The Academic Calendar of the Department of Music is as follows.
    First Term :- June to Middle of October.
    Second Term :- Middle November to 30th April.
    Winter Break :- 25th December to 1st January.

    Besides, Sundays & specified Government holidays are holidays in the Department.
    Practical classes for all the courses in the Department are held in clock hourly batches from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. from Monday to Friday. Theory classes are held on Saturdays.

  • Facilities

    This Department of Music is perhaps the first and only one which has well equipped, acoustically treated Sound Studio attached to it which is used for conducting Courses like Sound Recording and Reproduction & Music Composition and Direction.

    Also, it is made available on hire for recordings to outside parties on commercial basis. The Music of many Hindi, Marathi Films, Advertisements, Albums of famous artists like Dr. Prabha Atre, Arati Ankalikar, Smt Shruti Sadolikar have been recorded and many Films and Advertisements are dubbed in the Studio. The studio is also used for recording the performances of students for objective assessment and advice and suggestions are given towards their improvement. As a community service, Studio is made available in concessional rates to young upcoming artists

  • Library

    The department has well equipped library of books, text as well as reference Periodicals & Magazines of Music are also subscribed. Library members are encouraged to make full use of the material available in library.

    The department also has developed a audio sound library consisting of records, company records of vocal & instrumental recitals, extended play, long play, C.D.s of eminent Musicians. The department presently has collection of about 1000 hours recording. Students and members can listen & study the recorded music & thus avail this facility.

    a) Admission :-

     

         Admission is offered to eligible fresh students at the first year level of the respective  courses viz. Diploma, Degree & Post graduate.  The process of admission of the said courses starts from 1st June.  The audition tests are held thereafter & Final admissions are notified towards the end of June.  Admission forms can be obtained from the office of the Department from 1st May on payment of prescribed form fees in cash.

    Scholarships :- Annually 4 talented students of the department are awarded 'Pandit Bhimsen Joshi' scholarship, which is sponsored by Vile Parle Music Circle.
    Pt. Ram Marathe Scholarship is awarded to the student who secures first rank at Diploma Classical Vocal examination.
    Besides the students of Backward Class & Economically Backward Class can avail scholarship from the University.

      Eligibility :- 

    A candidate for being eligible for admission to the Diploma in Music, must have passed the S.S.C. (Std. X) examination conducted by the Maharashtra State board of Secondary education or an examination of another University or body recognised as equivalent thereto.  The candidates admission to the course will be subject to his passing an audition test conducted by the Head of the Institute.

    Fees :-  Tuition fees & library fees are charged per term twice in academic year.  Other fees viz. Music circle fees is payable once in the beginning of academic year.

                Caution money & library deposit are payable in full after accepting admission.  They are refundable after the students leave the department.  Caution money & library deposit should be claimed within one year from leaving the department.  The receipts of said fees must be preserved and produced while claiming the refund.

    e) Examinations :-  All annual examination except  Diploma and Pre Diploma are conducted in the department by the University of Mumbai soon after 15th March.  Practical examination continue up to end of March after which theory examinations start by first week of April & are over by middle of April.  Results are generally declared by end of May.

  • Research

    Ph.D. course was instituted in the Department in the last academic year that is 2006 - 07.

  • Seminars and Events 1. The seminar entitled 'Indian Music in the context of World Music' was organized on account of the world Music Day. This seminar was sponsored by Sangeet Natak Academy, Delhi
    2. The Seminar entitled 'Raag Ek Vichaar anek' was co-sponsored by Tata sons Ltd. Senior artists and musicologists were featured as panel members. The students & staff of various Music Departments, music institutions & artists across India attended the seminar. Both the seminars were vociferously appreciated by the music world.
    3. As a part of sesqui-centennial celebration the Department organized two programmes. First was Krishna Ranga - in this we explored various Rangas, that is, facets and aspects of the Life of Lord Krishna through various forms of Music.
    4. As a part of sesqui-centennial celebration was geeti bhaan. Geetibhan was a musical presentation that illustrated the relationship of life-patterns and music structures in India.
    5. As the programme was research oriented, the Department published a CD of the said programme as a Departmental publication. A CD was published at the august hands of Dr. Vijay Khole, the Vice Chancellor of Mumbai University.

    Co-Curricular Programs :- Many and varied co-curricular programs are organized in the department. Professor B.R.Deodhar Endowment & Late Shree Manohar Deshpande Endowment Programs are organized. The department organizes the recitals & performances of various eminent seasoned as well as young artists.
    Seminars, symposia are also organized in the department with the association of other reputed organizations working in Music field.


    Inter University Music Exchange Programme :-
    Under this programme, selected performing students of the Department along with the teachers visit and perform in a 3 day concert in the Music Department of other University. In return, performing students and teachers from the Music Department of that University visit and perform in similar concert in this Department. This exchange programme has provided wider scope to many talented student performers
