1. Infrastructure:
Over the years the Department has developed a modest academic infrastructure comprising of M.Sc. laboratories and several common research facilities. They include facilities for Plant Tissue Culture, Animal Cell Culture, and Microbial Culture, an X-ray generator for Biophysics, Sonicator, Chemostat, BOD Incubators, Plant Growth Chambers, High-speed Centrifuges, Spectrophotometers, Ultra low Freezer, Lypiliser, Spectroflurimeter, Gel Documentation Unit, etc. A Green House has also been developed to grow plants in controlled conditions. In addition, individual Faculty Members have developed fairly self-sufficient laboratories that could cater to research in areas such as Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Environmental Biotechnology and Plant and Animal Sciences. A Common Instrument Facility is already in place. Besides, facilities such as Bioinformatics Laboratory, Radioisotope Laboratory and a separate Animal House are being developed.
2. The academic year
2.1. Term duration:
The academic year normally begins on June 10 (or on the second Monday of June) every year and comprises of two terms with following durations:
First Term: June 12 to October 25 (both days inclusive);
Second Term: November 06 to April 30 (both days inclusive);
Winter Break: December 25 to January 01 (both days inclusive).
3. Hostel accomodation:
Students securing admission for M.Sc. Degree Course (in Life Sciences) are entitled for Hostel Accommodation. Six seats (three each for boys and girls) are reserved for the students of UDLSc in the Boys and Girls Hostels located in the University Campus at Vidyanagari.
Accommodation is also available for Students seeking admission for M.Sc. (by Research) and Ph.D. Degrees in Life Sciences at UDLSc. Number of Seats for such Students would depend on the availability of accommodation in respective Hostels.
Syllabus:
The Department offers Post-graduate Degree Courses such as M.Sc. (by Papers as well as by Research), and Ph.D. in Life Sciences.
1. M.Sc. Degree (by Papers): The M.Sc. Degree (by Papers) can be obtained with one of the four electives such as:
Biotechnology,
Biological Macromolecules,
Applied Medical Sciences, and
Neurobiology.
The M.Sc. courses are conducted at the University Department of Life Sciences along with three affiliated Colleges of the University in Mumbai, namely Ramnarain Ruia College (Matunga), Sophia College (Bhulabhai Desai Marg, formerly Warden Road) and St. Xavier College (Fort). UDLSc offers the first two electives for those who wish to seek admission for M.Sc. Degree (by Papers), whereas one could also opt for Biotechnology (elective) at Ramnarain Ruia College, Applied Medical Sciences (elective) at St. Xavier College, and Neurobiology (elective from the above) at Sophia College.
The candidates seeking admission for M.Sc. Degree (in Life Sciences) are offered above electives based on their merit (both at Under-graduate level and performance in the entrance examination conducted by UDLSc).
The M.Sc. (Part I) Syllabus for all the electives of Life Sciences is common and lectures for all the students (seeking admissions in all the above-mentioned Colleges) are conducted at UDLSc. Practicals, however, are conducted in the respective Colleges. In the second year of M.Sc. (i.e., Part II with chosen electives), all the lectures and practicals are conducted in respective Colleges.
2. M.Sc. Degree (by Research):
The M.Sc. Degree (by Research) involves submission of Dissertation to the University based on the research conducted under the supervision of a Faculty Member working at UDLSc. Besides, the Candidate seeking M.Sc. Degree (by Research) also needs to clear two Papers of theory (written examination of 100 marks each) conducted by the University of Mumbai.
The Syllabus of Theory Papers is restricted to two Papers (Paper II, i.e., Cell and Molecular Biology; and Paper III, i.e., Measurements and Techniques in Biology) of first year of M.Sc. Degree Course (in Life Sciences). The areas of research, which a Candidate could opt for M.Sc. Degree (by Research) and the number of seats available at UDLSc is prerogative of respective Research Guides of UDLSc.
3. Ph.D. Degree:
The Ph.D. Degree (in Life Sciences): involves submission of Dissertation to the University based on the research conducted under the supervision of a Faculty Member (who is a recognised Teacher of the University for guiding students for Ph.D. Degree) working at UDLSc. Students with Masters Degree (M.Sc.) in Sciences (as per the University Circular No. UG 1441 of 2005, dated October 25, 2005) are entitled to seek admission for Ph.D. Programme of UDLSc.
The areas of (topics for) research leading to M.Sc. (by Research) and Ph.D. Degrees can be chosen by students as per the research areas of the respective Guides in the Department of Life Sciences.
