Introduction
The Department of Civics and Politics was established in 1948 with the help of two Endowments.The Mayor Sir Pherozeshah Mehta Centenary Commemoration Fund and the Montague Memorial Fund together with a donation from the Bombay Municipal Corporations Municipal Fund and a substantial recurring grant from the then Government of Bombay.
The Department conducts two-year post-graduate course in Politics with various sub-groups leading to the award of M.A. (By Papers) degree of the University of Mumbai. In addition it also conducts M.Phil., Ph.D. and Post Graduate Diploma Course in Human Rights courses. Since inception of the Department, over 1000 students have taken their Master degree by papers, 10 students have taken their M.A. degree by research, 29 students have received their M.Phil. degree and 90 students have been awarded doctorate degree.Under the Post Graduate Diploma Course in Human Rights above 300 students have received their degrees. It is indeed a pleasure to report that alumni of the Department are holding key position in various institutions in India and abroad.
It is worth noting that the The Department contribution to the subject was recognised by the University Grants Commission when it was awarded the University Leadership Programme for three years in 1988 and the Ford Foundation Programme in 1988. Further the University Grants Commission also granted the status of Department Special Assistance in May 1992 and we are proud to receive this status in three phases till 31st March, 2007. The University Grants Commission, New Delhi has also selected and recommended the Department for induction and support under UGC Assistance for Strengthening of the Infrastructure of the Humanities and Social Science (ASIHSS) programme for a period of five years from 1st April, 2005 31st March, 2010. Under these scheme the Department received a grant of Rs. 31.00 lakhs.

Seminar on Reservation in Higher Education was organized on 29th June, 2006, wherein speakers were Dr. Parthasarthy, Mr. Samar Khadas, Dr. Madhu Paranjape and Mr. Deepak Pawar.
Dr. Priyavadan Patel, Professor, M.S. University, Baroda had given guest lectures for M.A. Part I & II students on 21st and 22nd September, 2006 on Topics Psephology as an emerging Discipline & State and Society in Contemporary Gujarat.
Dr. V.T. Padmanabhan had given lecture for M.A. Part I & II students on 21st to 24th September, 2006 on the topic Health Hazard of Nuclear Fuel Change.
International Seminar on Honour Killing : Violence against Women in South Asia on 9th and 10th October, 2006 was organized by the Department of Civics and Politics , University of Mumbai, Pakistan-India People Forum for Peace (PIPFP) and Mahila Sarvangeen Utkarsh Mandal (MASUM) India.
A National Seminar on Identity Politics & Citizenship under the DSA Phase-III Programme of the U.G.C was held on 12th & 13th January, 2007.
Dr. Rajendra Vora, Professor from Pune University inaugurated the M. Phil programme of the Department and delivered a lecture on Marxist Elitism & Pluralism on 19th December, 2006.
A series of Lectures were delivered by Professor Aijaz Ahmed on 29th, 30th and 31st January, 2007 on (1)Â Latin America in the second half of the 20th Century: A Survey, (2) Havana to Caracas Paths of revolutionary Politics and (3)Â Latin America Now: Electoral Balance and the Mass Movement respectively.
Professor Clovis Maksoud, Director, Centre for study of Global South, American University, Washington, DC delivered a lecture on the topic. The Relevance of Non -Alignment to the Architecture of an Emerging Multilateral System on 14th March, 2007.
Interactive session with Professor Paulo Gilberto Fagundes Visentini, Professor of International Relations from Brazil was organised on 22nd March, 2007. Mr. Paulo Antonia Pereira Pinto, Consul General of Brazil presented on that occasion.
Organised a National Seminar on Bhagat Singh and Beyond: Rethinking Radicalism in Indian Society, Culture and Politics organised by the Department of Civics and Politics at its Auditorium at the Pherozeshah Mehta Bhavan on 28th and 29th March, 2007.
The Department has arranged a programme of launching of the book titled The United Nations in a New Millenium: A Changing Scenario authored by Dr. B. N. Mehrish, Adjunct Professor of Politics, on Friday, 27th April, 2007.
A half day mentoring workshop for prospective Fulbright Applicants was organised by USEFI Mumbai along with the Department was organized at the Pherozshah Mehta Bhavan, Department of Civics and Politics on 10th May, 2007
Half Day workshop on Right to Information Administrative Practices and the Urban Poor was organized at the Pherozeshah Mehta Bhavan, Department of Civics and Politics on 28th May 2007.
Dr. Jonathan Ping, Assistant Professor International Relations, Bond University, Australia; has given a talk on Hybridisation Theory of the Middle Power Concept on 9th August, 2007.
Seminar on Splintering Urbanism in Mumbai : A Split Verdict was organised on 10th August, 2007, wherein speaker was Dr. Marie Helene Zerah (Urban Studies Research Fellow, Institute of Research for development and Centre de Sciences Humaines, New Delhi).
Dr. M. Seth Cohen (MA in Intercultural Communication from the University of New Mexico is a facilitator in interpersonal, non-verbal, and intercultural communication and conflict issues.) has delivered a talk on An Introduction to Peace building and Reconciliation Models on 13th August, 2007.
A Seminar was organised by the Department in which on Friday, 21st September, 2007, in which presentations on the topic of Politics of Energy and Water. Was made by Ms. Tejal Kanitkar. Ms. Kalpana Dixit spoke on the Politics of Energy and Politics of Water.
A special oration by the eminent Professor Social Scientist Dr. Kamal Mitra Chenoy of Jawaharlal Nehru University on Shaheed Bhagat Singh and Lessons for the Future was organized under the UGC ASIHSS Programme at 3.30 p.m. on Thursday 27th September, 2007.
A talk by Dr. T. Jayaraman, Professor, Department of Science & Technology Policy, TISS on Indo-US Nuclear Deal and its Implications was delivered on Friday, 28th September, 2007.
Dr.Madhu Paranjape, Reader in Statistics in Kirti College had given lecture for M. Phil students on the Topic Statistical Research Methods on 25th October, 2007.
Half Day seminar on General Semantics and its Current Relevance was organized on 26th, October, 2007. The main speakers were Andrea J. Johnson, President, Board of Trustees, Institute of General Semantics, Fort Worth, Texas, USA. Steve E. Stockdale, Executive Director, Institute of General Semantics, Fort Worth, Texas, USA in the Auditorium of the Department of Civics and Politics.One Day Seminar on India in Emerging World Order was organised by the Department on Tuesday, 18th December, 2007.
A Talk on US Foreign Policy Towards West & South Asia was delivered by MR. David Barsamian The Founder & Director of Alternative Radio, USA, And the Author of Targeting Iran with Noam Chomsky, Monday, 17th December, 2007.
