    Introduction

    The Department of Urdu was established in 1982 and is one of the Major languages Department of the University of Mumbai. Since its inception the Department has played an important role in establishing relevant specialization such as inter-disciplinary courses like Arabic ,Persian and Marathi etc. The academic curriculum of advance courses is supplemented by numerous seminars on comparative literature , inter-cultural hermeneutics, linguistics, translation ,philosophy and aesthetics etc.

     
    Aims & Objectives

    To motivate and prepare students for Post-Graduate Studies. To impart quality education at all levels of teaching i.e. language, literature, culture-studies and research. Our M.A. and M. Phil programmes are research oriented. A comprehensive syllabus, which we follow, has an inter-disciplinary and inter-cultural character which makes the students competent to pursue research in the field of inter-cultural studies which is a requirement in this era of globalization. Beside post-graduate studies in literature we offer part-time courses in language, which aim at teaching Urdu as a second language.


    To generate interest in Urdu language & literature at higher levels of learning through the following activities :


    1. Conducting post-graduate teaching effectively.

    2. Supervising research at the levels of M. Phil. & Ph. D. Identifying new areas of research & Conducting independent research through various research projects.

    3. Organizing seminars, conferences, workshops, symposia, Mushaira & Musical Programmes .

    4. Publishing research monographs, bibliographies & scholarly books.

    5. Conducting visiting lectures for students by eminent Urdu scholars.

  • Facilities

    The Department of Urdu is well-equipped with computers, printers ,scanner laptops, over head projector, internet and other facilities essential for generating interest in teaching and learning process. The Department has computers with InPage Urdu software and printer. The students are given opportunity to use InPage Urdu software and collect data regarding Urdu language and literature from Internet. The Department has also direct MTNL Telephone line.

    There are Boys and Girls Hostels on the Campus. Two seats in each are reserved for the students of the Department.

  • Library

    The department has its own library. It has 1000 books on Literature, Criticism, Literary history; and journals. The Library transaction is managed by the students who work under 'Earn and Learn' Scheme of the Department. These text books and reference books are used extensively by students. Dozens of new books are added to the library collection every year.

    Admission Process

    M. A.

     

    The candidate must be a graduate in Urdu language and literature. But in accordance with Ordinance 2237 of the University of Mumbai a candidate from other faculty can also join M.A. with Urdu provided he passes the Entrance Examination in Urdu. The examination is of Graduation level.

     

    M. Phil & Ph.D.

     

    As per new university regulations the candidate has to pass through Entrance Examination for M. Phil & Ph.D. The selection of the theme for the thesis depend upon the researchers area of interest and guide under whom the candidate wants to complete his research.

     

    Post Graduate Diploma in Urdu Journalism (PGD-UJ)

     

    Graduation in any faculty but knowledge of Urdu language is compulsory.

    Diploma in Urdu computer Application and Multilingual DTP(DU-CAMDTP)

    S.S.C. from any recognized Board of India Or equivalent Certificate.

    Post- Graduate Diploma in Urdu Theatre, Scrip writing, adoption and Translation (PGD-UTSAT)

    Graduation in any faculty but knowledge of Urdu language is compulsory.

     

    Certificate in Urdu Course

     

    The candidate must be a holder of Secondary School Certificate Examination from a recognized Board within or outside the State of Maharashtra.

     

    Diploma Course in Urdu

     

    The candidate must have passed the Certificate Examination in Urdu or is eligible for Diploma Course in Urdu.

     

    Advanced Diploma Course in Urdu

     

    The candidate must be a holder of Diploma Certificate in Urdu to become eligible for admission to the Advanced Diploma Course in Urdu.

  • Research

    The teaching faculty of the Department undertakes research work in specialized as well as inter-disciplinary fields. It focuses on research work in Urdu language and literature. The teaching faculty Dr.Saheb Ali, Head of the Department has undertaken Major research project funded by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi . A number of students are involved in research work through Ph.D. & M. Phil .

  • Services

    The office staff is fully equipped with computers and printers. As this is a student-friendly Department, the teaching and non-teaching staff provides first -aid to the students in difficulty. The teaching staff delivers public lectures on social issues like moral values, communal harmony and also topics of public interest like Mushaira & Kavi Sammelan and Musical Programmes etc. The Department has direct MTNL line facility available from 2008.

    The Department has started Ali Sardar Jafri Memorial lecture from March, 2009.
